Photo Analysis

The photo I have chosen is from the MontBleu Hotel Lobby located in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.  The facility is a hotel, spa, resort, and casino.  As any visitor can see, the hotel is designed in a very modern and upscale style.  Vibrant colors and unique materials have given this popular resort a look that is not seen elsewhere.

This photo presents many of the elements of design.  Color and light appear very vividly in this photo.  Though most areas of the space are adorned in simple beige materials, vibrant colors are used in specific areas for emphasis and attraction.  Intense lighting is used above the reception area in order to give patrons directions.  Lighting can be used as a sort of beacon in order to show traffic flows where they should be headed.  Texture variation is shown through the transition from stone flooring to carpet, as well as from flat ceilings to crazy ceilings.  Both the multi-color carpeting and blown-glass ceiling decorations show great variety in shape form and patterns.  Not only are they created with vibrant colors, but also with unique curvilinear forms and shapes.  This curvilinear form can also be seen within the lighting and ceiling enhancements above the reception area.

This photo also shows many of the principles of design.  The photo shows balance by the distribution of the normal and the more eccentric elements of the space.  By utilizing simpler materials around the reception area, the vibrancy of the room is evenly spaced around this central area.  Emphasis is shown with the lighting as spoken of earlier.  With intense lighting surrounding the reception area, patrons are easily directed to where they are supposed to go.  This photo also shows great harmony by balancing the unity and the variety of the space.  Immense unity is shown with the monotone materials around the reception desk.  The smooth surfaces and light-airy feel are well balanced with the "louder" areas of the space.  These areas are the ones in which you can find great variety.  There are a variety of vibrant colors, as well as a variety of shapes and forms.  The blown-glass ceiling and crazy carpeting would be too much if they were the only design elements found in the space, but when balanced with the simplicity and unity, they give off great harmony.

enjoy. xo Samantha
