"To create, one must first question everything."

Floor Plan for Law Office

Solution Statement

In order to create the Modern Style law office 20th Century designer, Eileen Gray, often envisioned back in the 1920’s and 1930’s, the color scheme consists of cool and very sleek neutrals accented with stainless steel and some raw warm colors found in the fabrics and artwork present in the design. The materials chosen are the most durable and Eco-friendly materials available in order to prevent any visible wear form the numerous meetings and clients that will walk through those doors. The materials are all exceptionally easy to clean as well, because the color mainly seen throughout the offices is white. With all that in consideration it is also important to note that the materials allow for the desired sustainability.

Materials and Calculations

MATERIAL 1:
FRITZTILE TERRAZZO TILE
     COLOR:
CLASSIC TERRAZZO COLLECTION – CONCOURSE C520210
     SIZE:
          12” X 12”, 3/16” THICK
     SPACE USED:
USED THROUGHOUT
     SUSTAINABILITY:
·         IT is made with natural stone chips, post-consumer recycled glass and an inert resin.
·         IT has been certified by the state of California’s Department of Health Services to be a low emitting material.
·         IT IS MADE UP OF 20%  RENEWABLE RESOURCES
     INSTALLATION:
·         Fritztile can be successfully installed indoors ONLY on top of substrates and subflooring that are sound.
·         LOW VOC ADHESIVES ARE AVAILABLE TO ENSURE THE SUSTAINABILITY OF THE INSTALLATION.
·         FRITZTILE OFFERS THEIR OWN ADHESIVES TO USE FOR INSTALLATION
     MAINTENANCE:
·         With proper care and maintenance, Friztile typically lasts the lifetime of the structure.
·         Low-maintenance characteristics translate to less labor and energy required to maintain the floor over its lifespan.
·         EVEN DIFFICULT CAN BE REMOVED WITH WARM WATER AND A MILD DETERGENT AND IT WILL EVEN RESIST DISCOLORATION FROM BLEACH.
     SPACE USED:
·         USED THROUGHOUT
     CALCULATIONS:
RECEPTION ROOM:    24’ X 20’ = 480’ SQ. FT.
CONFERENCE ROOM: 24’ X 15’ = 360’ SQ. FT.
PARTNER’S OFFICE:     15’ X 15’ = 225’ SQ. FT.
BREAK ROOM:                 10’ X 13’ = 130’ SQ. FT.

TOTAL:                     = 1,195’ + 120 = 1315’ SQ. FT.

FRITZTILE FLOORING COMES:
§  $21.50 PER SQ. FOOT
§  20 SQ. FEET PER CARTON
§  54 CARTONS TO A PALLET

1315 SQ. FT. OF FLOORING / 20 SQ. FT. PER CARTON  = 66 CARTONS
 66 CARTONS X 20 SQ. FT. PER CARTON X $21.50 PER SQ. FT = $28,380

MATERIAL 2:
GOLD BOND DURASAN PREFINISHED GYPSUM BOARD
     COLOR:
SANTA FE OFF WHITE
NATIONAL GYPSUM
SIZE:
4’ X 8’
SPACE USED:
THROUGHOUT
SUSTAINABILITY:
·         NATIONAL GYPSUM USES BYPRODUCT GYPSUM FOR THEIR BOARDS THAT COMES FROM THE CORE OF SOME WALLBOARD.  Power plants produce calcium sulfate or gypsum when they clean stack emissions. Rather than send the byproduct to a landfill, National Gypsum acquires it to make an essential building product.
INSTALLATION:
·         INSTALLATION IS QUICK AND EASY, AND MOST SPACES CAN BE FINISHED FROM START TO FINISH WITHIN A DAY
·         Because so much of the usual effort and expense of wall installation is eliminated, Durasan panels provide you with the flexibility to accommodate changing workspace configurations, so important in today’s highly “wired” environments.
·         As in regular drywall construction, ceilings are installed first, before Durasan paneling is erected. Panels are attached vertically. Durasan should not be applied to ceilings.
    MAINTENANCE:
·         Their wash ability and low maintenance provides an additional savings in overhead costs.
·         BECAUSE THE VINYL FILMS HAVE SPECIALLY FORMULATED LIGHT-STABLE COMPOUNDS AND PIGMENTS THEY PROVIDE MAXIMUM STABILITY AND COLOR RETENTION UNDER VARYING ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS.
·         FOR THE CLEANING OF MOST COMMON DIRT AND MARKS ALL THAT IS NEEDED IS A MOIST CLOTH OR SPONGE AND A MILD CLEANER.  THEN RINSE WITH WATER AND WIPE DRY.
·         ALKYD OR LATEX SEMIGLOSS ENAMEL, OIL PRIMER WITH COAT OF OIL PAINT OR FLAT LATEX, OR TWO COATS OF FLAT OIL PAINT CAN BE APPLIED TO PAINT TO ONE’S SATISFACTION.
    CALCULATIONS:
RECEPTION ROOM:
WALL 1: 24’ X 8’ = 192’ – (7’ X 6’) = 150’ SQ. FT.
WALL 2:                            20’ X 8’ = 160’ SQ. FT.

Photo Analysis

The photo I have chosen is from the MontBleu Hotel Lobby located in Lake Tahoe, Nevada.  The facility is a hotel, spa, resort, and casino.  As any visitor can see, the hotel is designed in a very modern and upscale style.  Vibrant colors and unique materials have given this popular resort a look that is not seen elsewhere.

This photo presents many of the elements of design.  Color and light appear very vividly in this photo.  Though most areas of the space are adorned in simple beige materials, vibrant colors are used in specific areas for emphasis and attraction.  Intense lighting is used above the reception area in order to give patrons directions.  Lighting can be used as a sort of beacon in order to show traffic flows where they should be headed.  Texture variation is shown through the transition from stone flooring to carpet, as well as from flat ceilings to crazy ceilings.  Both the multi-color carpeting and blown-glass ceiling decorations show great variety in shape form and patterns.  Not only are they created with vibrant colors, but also with unique curvilinear forms and shapes.  This curvilinear form can also be seen within the lighting and ceiling enhancements above the reception area.

This photo also shows many of the principles of design.  The photo shows balance by the distribution of the normal and the more eccentric elements of the space.  By utilizing simpler materials around the reception area, the vibrancy of the room is evenly spaced around this central area.  Emphasis is shown with the lighting as spoken of earlier.  With intense lighting surrounding the reception area, patrons are easily directed to where they are supposed to go.  This photo also shows great harmony by balancing the unity and the variety of the space.  Immense unity is shown with the monotone materials around the reception desk.  The smooth surfaces and light-airy feel are well balanced with the "louder" areas of the space.  These areas are the ones in which you can find great variety.  There are a variety of vibrant colors, as well as a variety of shapes and forms.  The blown-glass ceiling and crazy carpeting would be too much if they were the only design elements found in the space, but when balanced with the simplicity and unity, they give off great harmony.

enjoy. xo Samantha
